So I was browsing my short stories folder again, and I found out where the name Ikovi came from. It came from a experimental plot that I never followed up on that involved Ikovi as a mercenary commander who got into all these fights over absolutely nothing. It was a really sucky plot, but it was fun to write the combat, which is what this short is of. Anyway this one has a lot of swearing, so unless you want your virgin ears to bleed...
“Alright, So the payment is 22 thousand?” said Ikovi looking around his proceedings.
They were gathered in a town square type clearing, in the middle of a deserted town. Behind him stood ten more people, mercenaries’, not the good ones though, Ikovi liked to keep the good ones behind lines, an ace up the proverbial sleeve.
The same was true for his long time, but usually only mildly violent, rival. Kidima was a fellow mercenary captain, and despite their past discrepancies’ and fights they occasionally did business together.
“21 thousand, that’s what we agreed, but I’ll pay the extra thousand, not very much” said Kidima shrugging.
“No it was definitely 22 thousand, I always remember by business dealings” said Ikovi proudly, Kidima never had his kind of memory.
“No it was 21 thousand, you stupid f**k”
“What the hell are you talking about? It was 22 you f**king moron!”
“21 you moron!”
Now he was really angry, Kidima was obviously wrong Ughh, put this stupid f**k in his f**king place! “22! Go to hell!” he shouted and brought his rifle and shot at Kidima.
It took about ten second for everyone to scatter and go for cover, that was besides the three bodies that were left behind.
Then Ikovi lost sight of what was happening around him, and went into that sort of battle tunnel vision that he always fought in, only seeing the people who were shooting at him. He had three grenades, his assault rifle, a 9mm particle pistol, and his combat knife, more than enough to beat Kidima.
Ikovi relished the up close and personal kill, and thus he pulled the thin and long combat knife and dashed towards the enemies’ side of the courtyard. He dropped to his kness and slid, flipping the knife quickly in his hand as he slid behind the low brick wall that was protecting one of Kidimas men.
The man was surprised when he slid in next to him, and Ikovi slashed the blade upwards, cutting his throat deeply. He quickly wiped the blade and sheathed it on it’s shoulder holster, bringing up his rifle instead. He shot another and then leveled it in the one arm, found the source of the rounds glancing off his micro armor, and fired. A quick burst and he was dead.
Then he spotted the one he was interested in fighting, Kidima “Eat this you bastard!” he shouted as he unloaded the rest of the clip at the figure.
Kidima apparently also appreciated the close quarters kill because rather than taking cover or running he ran in close to him. They knock the rifles from each other’s hands before he could reload or Kidima could shoot.
Ikovi went for his pistol, Kidima for a knife, much like Ikovis on a shoulder holster “Eat me!” shouted Kidima as he brought the blade down with a flash of silver.
Ikovi blocked it with the top his pistols trigger guard, and sent a punch Kidimas way. Kidima backed off and ducked as he dodged the punch, drawing his own pistol. They both shot and ran at the same time, moving out of the way of fire and sending it at the same time.
Kidima jumped up and pulled himself through a window, dropping into the house, disregarding the glass in the window pane. He ducked behind the cover and thrust his arm up and fired a few shots.
“Don’t you run boy!” shouted Ikovi as he avoided the fire, reloaded his pistol and umped through the window next to the one Kidima had gone through. Ikovi shot at Kidima who was still trying to reload the pistol.
Kidima threw himself away from the cover of the window and slid on the ground before jumping back to his feet and dashing up a set of stairs “Get back here!” shouted Ikovi again as he reached for a grenade.
He tossed it up the stairs and headed up them after Kidima, all before the grenade exploded. Kidima made an impossible shot with his pistol when he saw the grenade that had been launched after him, nailing it right center and sending it flying.
Unfortunately Kidima had not shot the grenade in time, so it still exploded within range of him, but luckily it came close enough to Ikovi to cause some damage to him too. The grenade exploded between the two, shorting both of their respective armor systems.
Ikovi drew his knife again with a flourish and threw it, at Kidima, who was already getting out of the way, flipping behind a conveniently placed couch. The blade sunk about three inches into the wall behind him. Kidima looked to see what he had landed on, a body, apparently someone had already been here before they had.
Not that Kidima really cared; he had only brought the usual cannon fodder to this deal. But that didn’t mean he was completely useless “Ha! Perfection” muttered Kidima triumphantly as he wrenched the rifle away from the dead body.
Ikovi shot into the couch and was about to come after Kidima again when he stood up, a rifle in his hands “You cheating bastard!” shouted Ikovi as he fired one last shot and ran for cover.
“I don’t want to hear it, grenade-sleeper!” Kidima shouted back as he chased after Ikovi.
“What are you talking about? You have grenades too not a very nice person!” shouted Ikovi as he ducked low and slid across Kidima’s line of sight firing from his low vantage point with his pistol before standing back up.
“Oh yeah!” said Kidima and then he threw a grenade at Ikovi.
Oh f**k me thought Ikovi as he had no choice but to jump backwards out the window behind him to avoid the blast. Ikovi was confused at first when he felt himself only drop a few feet, and then he looked up. He had been caught by a man, a familiar, and useful face, half hanging out of a helicopter.
The man smiled at him as he pulled himself and Ikovi back into the helicopter “Backup!” he shouted cheerily.
Kidima looked up, and saw the helicopter, just about to take to the skies “Who's the cheater!” he shouted and then he leveled the rifle on Ikovi and pulled the trigger.
Click.
f**k me. And then Kidima smashed the rifle over his knee in frustration.
“All is fair in love and war, pregnant dog” said Ikovi, throwing his pistol at Kidima…
